AVG was a completely new product to me when I first installed Vista. Of course, my existing version of Symantec Antivirus would no longer work on Vista, so I had to look elsewhere for some protection. I actually looked on Windows Marketplace and found this nice little freebie.
I’ve been using it for about two years now and don’t have any complaints. I’ve been alerted a few times over the years when something is detected, and it plays nicely with my other AV product, ClamWIn. On my XP system, it plays very nicely with Symantec Antivirus 10.
Your behavior is the absolute best protection from contracting a virus, but overall AVG is a great free product that you should consider in your security suite. I strongly feel that you can achieve an acceptable level of protection for your home PC by leveraging free antivirus and antispyware products with “good behavior”. Good behavior means not opening attachments that you are not sure about; not following links from unknown sources that send you e-mail; paying careful attention to what you download and install on your PC; being careful in the web sites that you choose to visit, etc.
You may download the latest version of AVG Free here. Now to the meat…
AVG Free contains several modules to help protect you in your computing experiences. The main antivirus engine does everything you would expect – updates itself daily, performs scheduled scans, offers real-time protection, on-demand scanning, and integrates with web browsers and e-mail clients to protect you from known bad guys.
It’s very simple and intuitive to set up and use, which is good for an AV app. The only thing I do not like is that with the scheduled scan feature, you have to choose either every day or none. The paid version of the product allows you to employ a more realistic weekly or monthly scan. But this is an easy situation to deal with, especially since I like using two AV products on any given system.
To address the above issue, I’ve run without he scan enabled and actually currently allow the scans to occur evey day. I am happy to say that both options have been workable.
