drop.io – What is it?

March 24th, 2008 By pelokee Leave a Comment

What is drop.io ? (Visit the drop.io FAQ page)

Well, I’m not exactly quite sure yet, but it appears to be very freaking cool! I heard an interview with the creators on [email protected] today and headed over to check it out. (If you’d like to hear the interview, check out episode 46 of [email protected] here!)

You can get to drop.io here

At its most basic task level, it seems to have successfully met the need to share to files with others.

Uploading and sharing files is easier than with anything else I have found, and the site is not fraught with ads, porn, pop-ups, or other unpleasent things.

One of the amazing features of drop.io is that you do not set up an account. You determine a unique name for your “drop”, as it’s called, and then all content may be found at http://drop.io/yourname. (For example, http://drop.io/pelokee).

Amazingly, you also receive a telephone number by which you can record messages for your subscribers or vistors, a fax number (incoming and outgoing functionality!), an e-mail address, and a blog.

Because I just found out about this literally 20 minutes ago, I don’t have all the scoop, but stay tuned for more on this. This promises to be cool as heck. For more info, here is how the drop.io website identifies itself:

“A drop is a ‘discrete’ chunk of space you can use to store and share anything (pictures, video, audio, docs, etc) privately, without accounts, personal registration, or an email addresses. Drops are not ‘searchable’ and not ‘networked’, they just exist floating in space, as points for exchange for individuals or groups.

Create as many as you want in as little as two clicks and set things like a password, whether others can add to the drop, and how long you want it to exist (you can renew later). Drops are a simple platform for sharing which are by default private, but can be flexibly used in a range of ways from sharing family photos and videos to collaborating on work documents.

Each drop has four primary input methods – the web, email, voice, and fax – and a few secondary ones like ‘widgets’.

Anything you input into a drop can then be retrieved on the web at the drop location

you can also:

A. email to create: Email/MMS [email protected] to create drops on the fly, put in the subject line your desired drop name, attach the files you want dropped.
B. Download as zip: click download as zip, download the whole drop in one shot
C. Drop Logo Change: you can now customize your drop’s logo by clicking on it
D. Mobile View: goto drop.io/yourdrop/m and it will format for your phone
E. Titling and text editing: just click on the text and edit
F. Subscription: get notices via email or RSS (full enclosure) when your drop is updated”
